LAUNCH: Digital Garage in Glasgow

News of the launch of the Digital Garage in Glasgow from our chums at Google:

Did you know that businesses with a strong online presence grow twice as fast as those without?

Keith Brown MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure, Investment and Skills and Peter Barron, Vice-President of Google UK, are delighted to invite you to the launch of the new Digital Garage in Glasgow. Based in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow city centre, the Digital Garage will be a place where anyone can come and learn how to harness the power of the internet to grow their business and develop new vocational skills.

Please come along on Wednesday 21st September to hear more from Keith and Peter about what the Digital Garage will offer Glasgow and the region, and hear first-hand from businesses that have already used the Garage to develop their online presence. Following the launch and a light lunch, the Garage will officially open for its first training sessions.

We look forward to seeing you for the launch event:

NEWS: Entrepreneurs needed for The Enterprise Challenge

Our parent organisations Edinburgh Napier University and Bright Red Triangle are currently looking for local businesses to take part in their TEC programme (otherwise known as The Enterprise Challenge) from 26 – 30 September 2016, which is led by the Centre for Entrepreneurship teaching team at Edinburgh Napier University.

It involves having a group of students look at your business or a specific issue for your business, and present findings after a week of research for you – and it’s free!

They need entrepreneurs that are reasonably well established and have been trading for upwards of a year. Edinburgh Napier University runs The Enterprise Challenge where a group of students work together on entrepreneurial business challenges. We are looking for businesses that may be interested in the offer of a potentially valuable, objective view of your current business and some fresh ideas for the future.

At the end of the week the students will present their suggestions as to how you should grow your business. Hopefully you will get some worthwhile ideas that you can use in developing your business. All information that you divulge will be treated in the strictest confidence and will not be used outside this project.

Your availability and access requirements are:

  • 2pm on Mon 16 September 2016 for 2-3 hours with a 3 min introduction / overview of your business to present to the group
  • Students to have access to you by phone or email on a daily basis (for the week, 26 – 30 September)
  • Then if possible for you to join us for presentations on Friday 30 September from 1pm for about an hour (we will create a timetable to reduce the impact on your schedule and give you notice)

Please let Cilla Richards, Project Coordinator, Bright Red Triangle at Napier University know if you or anyone you know would like to participate. Contact: c.richards@napier.ac.uk | +44 (0)131 455 4372

ARTICLE: Introducing – Cyber Angels

By Samantha Leeman, Bright Purple Resourcing. Original article available here.

At Girl Geek Scotland our aim is to grow a community of professionals and entrepreneurs who are able to support each other at entry-level and throughout their careers in computing, creativity, and enterprise. A big part of this is ensuring that there are role models for everyone to learn from and aspire to.

The skills shortage in Cybersecurity is something that is and continues to be well documented; by 2018 there will be a global shortage of 4.2 million people who work in the sector. And according to (ISC)2’s latest study, only 6% of those working in the sector are women, a drop of 4% after the figure remained unchanged for 2 years at 10%.

Keen to address the lack of role models for women in Cybersecurity, Samantha Leeman from Bright Purple Resourcing, also one of our Event Managers at Girl Geek Scotland, is running an event in Edinburgh on the 22nd September at Codebase on Castle Terrace, 6pm, until 9pm.

We would encourage anyone reading this to join us on the 22nd; if you are currently working in, or interested in learning more about Cybersecurity. The event is FREE and a great opportunity for you to network, learn more about the sector, and of course meet some role models!

Speakers at the event include Alison McAlroy – Information Security Manager – Tesco Bank, Chelsea Sievewright – Information, Risk and Security Consultant – Prudential, Jamie Graves – CEO – ZoneFox, and Laura Johnston – Associate Consultant – PwC.

The world of Cybersecurity has moved from how the media depicts a Cybersecurity expert; typically; a nerdy male sat alone on his laptop in-front of a black screen with green coding.

One of the key skills that employers are looking for is “communication”. Some of the biggest challenges people working in the sector currently face are; communicating with multiple stakeholders; and delivering business objectives whilst ensuring risk management continues to be prioritised.

Studies over the last 30 years have consistently indicated that women are better communicators than men; and these skills are important than ever, as the Cybersecurity sector continues to adapt to changing technologies.

Chelsea Sievewright – Information Risk and Security Consultant at Prudential said, “I’m delighted to be speaking at Girl Geek Scotland’s even on the 22nd of September, it’s great to have the opportunity to pass on my knowledge in a supportive and relaxed environment. Samantha is doing a brilliant job organising this event in Edinburgh, and I’m really looking forward to it. It is a wonderful opportunity to network with other women working in Information Security and also showcase the great talent we have in Scotland. It’s no secret that women are severely underrepresented in the sector and I’m always looking for ways to help promote it to younger women.

Events like these provide a channel for collaborations and new ideas on how we can help bridge the skills gap in the future.”

So come and join Girl Geek Scotland for FREE on the 22nd September at Codebase 6pm – 9pm, you are all welcome. Event link here. (This is event is sold out as of 1 September, but there is an active waiting list so do put your name down and you will be notified if tickets become available).

To attend this year’s summer school entrepreneurs must first complete the online training devised by leaders in entrepreneurship at MIT, accessed via the Scotland Can Do SCALE website www.cando.scot/scale

The online course should be completed by 31st May and entrepreneurs who complete the course will be eligible to apply for the summer school. Successful applicants will be invited to attend a selection day on the 27th or 28th June in Glasgow, in which this year’s summer school cohort will be chosen.

Eleanor Mitchell, Head of High Growth Ventures, Scottish Enterprise said, “We’re delighted to be hosting 70 entrepreneurial business leaders in Stirling this August who will get access to expert tuition from MIT and Harvard. We’ve designed this course to offer you a practical approach, a set of tools and access to a group of like-minded leaders to help you to the next level. We can’t wait to meet the 2016 cohort.”

Funded and delivered by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Funding Council, and sitting under the Scotland Can Do government banner, the SCALE programme aims to develop a cohort of Scottish entrepreneurs who are capable of building world-class businesses.

EVENT: Free tickets to ScotlandJS and ScotlandCSS for underrepresented groups

Free tickets to ScotlandJS and ScotlandCSS for underrepresented groups*

News from our friends at Scotland JS:

ScotlandJS have created a diversity support fund to allow individuals from underrepresented groups to attend the
Scottish JavaScript and Scottish CSS conferences free of charge. The conferences are running from June 1st-3rd at Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh.

If you are from an underrepresented group, or know someone that could benefit then please apply here: http://scotlandjs.com/diversitysupport

ScotlandJS have been working for years to improve the diversity of our conferences. This year, across the two conferences, there are 15 female or non-binary speakers. We organised support groups to support potential first-time speakers and encourage them to give their first talk. This led to an increase in the number of proposals from underrepresented groups from 8 in 2015, to 32 this year. We are also providing complimentary childcare over the three days, with children welcome at all of the evenings’ events.

This fund would not have been made possible without the support of our partners: FanDuel, Amazon, Cultivate, JP Morgan, Cucumber, Travis, Scott Logic, CodeClan, ScotlandIS, Girl Geek Scotland, Zendesk and Future Learn.
